NEW FOR JULY 2009

Learn to Knit Workshops, York

SEPTEMBER 2009

Knitting for Beginners, Doncaster

Welcome to EcoKnits, home of ethical, organic, fair-trade knitting!

Here you'll find scrumptious offerings from the big-name suppliers such as Artesano and Mirasol, as well as beautifully crafted wooden needles and hand-made notions.

One of our main objectives, however, is to sell as much British  sourced yarn as possible.  We love British yarn, and things made by British businesses.  If possible, we'd sell nothing but British stuff, but that would preclude Merino and some days, nothing but Merino will do... However, we have superwash Buttersoft Merino hand-painted in beautiful Worcestershire, the softest British Bluefaced Leicester naturally hand-dyed in Suffolk, and the finest Yorkshire Wensleydale for your knitting delectation.  It's going to be so hard to part with this stuff.   Keep your eyes peeled for the little , and Buy British wherever you can.  Most of our knitting notions are hand made in Britain too.

All parcels will be sent First Class in either blue plastic pouches, or recycled cardboard tubes.  I can't find an eco-friendly version of those almost indestructible pouches that will keep your yarn safe and dry, but I'm still looking. Little orders will be sent in second-hand padded envelopes, unless you request otherwise.  We like to reduce-reuse-recycle wherever possible.

We now do Gift Vouchers!  Ideal for that special knitter in your life.  See the Nice Things page for further details. These can be emailed - ideal for last minute gifts. :)

What's New?

Learn to knit in company! Learn to Knit workshops at Millers Yard in York are now bookable, and a Knitting for Beginners FE course at Hayfield School in Doncaster, South Yorkshire is in the pipeline for September.

Manos del Uruguay Silk Blend shades 7325 Pisces and 7105 Sagittarius are now back in stock in limited quantities!  Hurry up and grab yours now.

Mirasol Samp'a - new spring colours are now in stock!  Organic cotton, naturally dyed in a range of 16 wonderful shades.  The new colours really expand the admittedly limited initial range, and now include greens, purples, black and pink.

Wyndwitch's unique, hand-painted one-off's are proving very popular! Sunburst is the newest colourway and just looking at it makes you want to bury your face in its softness.

Don't forget to check out Riihivilla Aarni, naturally hand-dyed yarn from Finland.  We have two new colour selections in stock - yellow and natural grey.

4ply weight, perfect for Nordic mittens and Fair Isle, this beautiful yarn comes in colour selection packs.  It's dyed using wild mushrooms and back garden herbs and plants.  Fair trade too, as the wool producers get paid a premium for the Finnsheep fleeces.

Did you know...?

2009 is the International Year of Natural Fibres

Its objectives are to:

  • raise awareness and stimulate demand for natural fibres;
  • promote the efficiency and sustainability of the natural fibres industries;
  • encourage appropriate policy responses from governments to the problems faced by natural fibre industries;
  • foster an effective and enduring international partnership among the various natural fibres industries.

Come see the lovely selection of hand made needle rolls and project bags on the Nice Things page. Nics Knots bags are beautifully made with great attention to detail.
